Contraceptive use and increased risk of thrombosis?

It's interesting to note that contraceptives can increase risk of thrombosis. A report in 1980 showed that two women who died of myocardial infarction did not smoke or have hyperlipidemia, hypertension or atherosclerosis; the only connection was an oral contraceptive (1). I'd like to learn more about why this would happen.

Dark chocolate eaten in moderate amounts weekly is associated with improved cardiovascular fitness in women, research suggests. Scientists are only beginning to understand why dark chocolate is heart healthy, but a new study offers this explanation—its rich content of cocoa antioxidant compounds, called polyphenols, could enhance activity of special proteins called sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs), which are involved in cholesterol metabolism. When you eat a slice of apple pie, or any pie, or any food at all today, on Carl Sagan Day, it may be worthwhile to reflect on this quote, one of the beloved television series host's most famous from Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.
